The 250‑year‑old Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the United States and a proud landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Located near Highlands at the northern tip of the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, this beautifully preserved 18th‑century octagonal tower has guided mariners since 1764.
The lighthouse has remained active for centuries, going dark only during major conflicts including the Civil War, the Spanish‑American War, World War I, and World War II. Next door, the historic Lighthouse Keepers’ Quarters now serves as the Sandy Hook Visitor Center.
Set within the former military grounds of Fort Hancock, the lighthouse is one of many attractions on the peninsula. Visitors can climb 95 steps and a nine‑rung ladder to reach the lens room at the top, where sweeping coastal views await.
Beyond the lighthouse, Sandy Hook offers a rich mix of history and nature: old concrete gun batteries, the largest American holly forest on the East Coast, excellent surf fishing, hiking trails, a paved bike path, sandy ocean beaches, bayside marshes, and more than 300 species of birds.
Additional attractions include Fort Hancock and the Fort Hancock Museum.
